The barn is constructed from all local Southern Yellow Pine, the mainstay of the great Southern Forests, and every piece of wood is local. The massive posts lining the main room were sourced and recovered from a site just a few miles south near the Chattahoochee River in Sandy Springs. Most of the great Southern Yellow Pine forests were logged over a hundred years ago, Southern Yellow Pine today does not generally grow large enough in Georgia to produce posts as large these and needs to be sourced from Mississippi. However, during the planning of the barn, knowing that massive trees would need to be used, we worked closely with our local lumber mill to source the posts and were able to identify a stand of trees that were being culled for road construction and were able to convince them to let us use them for our barn rather than have then ground up for mulch.
As a registered State of Georgia Department of Agriculture Agritourism Site (“Georgia Grown”), The Barn on Birmingham has already been recognized as a one of a kind North Atlanta landmark. The barn was immediately regarded as the most beautiful new construction barn in the Atlanta area and has been recognized by numerous designers and publications. The classic raised center aisle design and beautiful grounds make the barn a constant source of inquiry by drivers slamming on the brakes and turning in to take pictures and ask questions. We are always happy to take folks on a tour!
